about Us

How we work

We undertake projects that tangibly benefit social justice reform efforts and impart real-world knowledge and experience upon students involved. After the publishing of these reports, WAJA’s other portfolios enact WAJA’s mission by spreading our reports to student, legal, and social media audiences.

Our Projects Portfolio consists of student volunteers who work in teams to research and produce a significant body of work that tangibly benefits criminal justice reform efforts. The Project Team works closely with a Partner Organisation to address key issues which contribute to offending and recidivism in order to reduce incarceration rates. Each project is also overseen by a Project Mentor. Our previous mentors have been lawyers from Herbert Smith Freehills, Gilbert + Tobin, the Mental Health Law Centre, the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia, and more!

The Outreach Portfolio take WAJA’s projects and raise our community awareness. Outreach Officers plan, organise and run all of WAJA’s community events, with universities, students, NGOs and other stakeholders to promote WAJA and our mission. Outreach Officers gain experience in professional writing, event management, grassroots advocacy, student engagement, and communicating with professionals and the public.

The Communications Portfolio plans, produce, edit and publish communications across WAJA’s social media platforms, website and email campaign program. Our Communications Officers take what our Outreach and Projects Officer’s do and push it towards a bigger audience via social media. They also design high-quality and engaging visual content and graphics. Within the Communications Team, select Officers manage data analytics, manage WAJA's website and track KPIs.

The Advocacy Portfolio strategically plan, develop and implement impactful campaigns to drive reform of criminal justice issues. They work closely with other social justice organisations to effectively campaign for reform on the topics of our Projects. The Advocacy Portfolio engages with decision-makers and relevant stakeholders to proactively influence law and policy reform.

Change doesn't happen in a vacuum; it takes cooperation between different sections of society to enact meaningful change.” Sophie Stewart, Social Reinvestment WA.
